Northern Powergrid

Northern Powergrid, an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of MidAmerican Energy
Holdings Company, delivers electricity to 3.9 million homes and businesses in
northeast England through its two subsidiaries, Northern Powergrid (Northeast)
Limited and Northern Powergrid (Yorkshire) plc.
Northern Powergrid (Northeast), based in Newcastle, U.K., was acquired in 1996.
Northern Powergrid (Yorkshire), based in Castleford, U.K., was acquired in 2001.
The companies’ service territories are adjacent.
Together, the companies include:
- 10,000 square miles of service territory
- Nearly 38,000 gigawatt-hours of electricity distributed per year
- 18,000 miles of overhead lines
- 40,000 miles of underground lines
Northern Powergrid also owns an engineering contracting subsidiary, Integrated
Utility Services, that designs and builds power projects for industrial customers
and other utilities.
CE Gas, Northern Powergrid’s natural gas exploration subsidiary, owns natural
gas-producing fields in Poland and the North Sea off the coast of the U.K.
Northern Powergrid is one of the industry’s leading safety performers. During 2012, Northern Powergrid
received its 11th and eighth consecutive annual gold awards for the Northeast and Yorkshire licenses
respectively from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, along with a President’s Award,
in recognition of the company’s outstanding health and safety performance over a sustained period.
Integrated Utility Services received a third consecutive annual gold award for its health and safety
performance and completed 1.36 million man-hours worked without incurring a lost-time accident.
